An archived reference site, a research paper with all its linked footnotes, a product gallery you want to browse on a flight: downloading a site to the local disk turns a live, ephemeral thing into a stable, private copy. SiteSucker Pro for macOS does exactly that, pulling down pages, images, stylesheets and embedded video while keeping the original folder layout intact.

Bug fixes: PDF creation and new HTML formatting

Version 6.2.2 fixes bugs that affected PDF creation and introduces a Format HTML option in the Webpage settings. The rest of the tool remains the familiar, quiet workhorse it has always been: set a URL, adjust a few filters, and let it run.

What controls does it give over a download

The Limits section lets you cap link depth, total file count, and minimum or maximum file size. In File Types, you can switch between downloading every linked asset or only selected formats. The Advanced section includes a user-agent setting that can imitate Safari or Firefox, and by default the app respects robots.txt exclusions.

What does the Pro edition add

SiteSucker Pro extends the standard app with the ability to download embedded video. It is the same engine—local directory mirroring, a running operation log—tuned for richer media.

A researcher’s habit: freezing a reference

Imagine a doctoral candidate in environmental policy who has cited a government report published as a sprawling HTML site. The report is due for revision next quarter, and the current version must remain accessible for her thesis defence eighteen months from now. She enters the base URL, tells SiteSucker Pro to stay within three link levels, and excludes anything over 15 MB. An hour later she has a local copy that mirrors every paragraph, chart, and linked appendix exactly as it appeared on the day she consulted it. No login, no broken redirects, no quiet edits by a distant webmaster.

Tuesday download: three levels deep with size filters

On a Tuesday morning she opens SiteSucker Pro and types the report’s address into the URL field. She opens the Limits pane and sets a depth of three levels, a maximum of 800 files, and a minimum file size of 1 KB to skip tracking pixels. In File Types she selects only HTML, CSS, PNG, JPEG, and PDF. The Advanced section already shows a Safari user agent from her last session. She clicks the download button and watches the log window fill, line by line, with each fetched resource. When the counter stops, she opens the local folder in Finder: the directory tree matches the site’s structure. She drags the folder into DEVONthink for full-text indexing and closes SiteSucker Pro. The whole session takes under forty minutes.

Recent refinements and daily use

Two adjustments in version 6.2.2 affect everyday work more than their brevity suggests. The PDF-creation bugs that were squashed mean a captured page renders as a clean local PDF rather than a clipped or blank document, which matters when archiving articles you want to annotate later. The new Format HTML option tidies the source markup of saved pages, so opening a downloaded HTML file in BBEdit or Nova presents reasonably structured code instead of a single collapsed line. Neither change alters the core workflow, but both remove small, persistent frictions that accumulate over dozens of captures.

Finder index: Spotlight finds every mirrored text file

SiteSucker Pro’s real strength emerges in combination. Downloaded folders sit naturally in Finder, where Spotlight indexes the text of every HTML and PDF file without extra steps. Dropping a mirrored site into an app like DEVONthink, Keep It, or Eagle adds tagging and visual browsing. The log file, opened from the toolbar into Console, can be copied into a project note as a record of exactly what was fetched and when. Because the app respects the site’s directory structure, a captured documentation set can be served locally through a static web server or bundled into a zip archive and shared with a colleague who has no internet access. The user-agent setting, meanwhile, helps when a server delivers different markup to different browsers: switching to Firefox often retrieves a simpler, more portable version of a page than the Safari profile. None of this requires scripting; it is simply a matter of knowing where the saved folder lands and which apps you already use to read, search, and annotate local files.

Questions I actually get

How can I view the download log?

Click the Open Log button on the toolbar to see the current operation log, or open it directly in Console for more detail.

Does SiteSucker Pro follow robots.txt rules?

By default, files listed in robots.txt are skipped during a download, though you can change this in the settings.

Which macOS version does the current release require?

SiteSucker Pro requires macOS 14.0 or later, and runs on both Intel and Apple Silicon Macs.
