YT Saver is a desktop utility that captures video, audio and full playlists from the web and converts them into a wide array of standard formats.

Save from any site: cast a wide net

Its download engine works across more than 10,000 sources, from major video platforms to niche hosts. A built-in browser lets you navigate and grab material without leaving the application.

Batch work: queue what you need

Multiple downloads run in parallel, so a long playlist or a set of clips from different pages builds up while you continue working elsewhere.

Format choice: video or pure audio

Input support covers common containers such as MP4, MKV, MOV, AVI, FLV and WEBM, while audio alone can be extracted in AAC, FLAC, MP2, WAV, OGG and many others.

Performance notes: light on the system, steady under load

During everyday use YT Saver stays unobtrusive. On a mid-range Intel Mac it idles at roughly 80–120 MB of RAM when the built-in browser is closed, rising to about 200 MB with a few tabs open. CPU spikes are brief and tied to the conversion step: a 1080p MP4 transcode to HEVC will push one or two cores for a minute or so, then the app settles back to near-silence. Heat is rarely an issue, though batch-converting a dozen long clips in a row will eventually spin the fans—this is standard behaviour for any encoder. Stability has been solid across several days of mixed downloading and converting; no unexpected quits or hangs in version 10.15.0.

Parsing step: nearly a second faster after the update

Version 10.15.0 consolidated a handful of under-the-hood changes rather than introducing flashy new panels. Users of the previous release will notice that the parsing step—the moment between pasting a URL and seeing the format list—now completes about a second faster on common video hosts. The private-mode folder prompt appears less aggressively; it no longer asks twice if you have already set a password earlier in the session. Audio extraction presets were reordered so that lossless formats sit at the top of the menu, a small but welcome edit for anyone archiving music. The team also addressed a rare bug where some MKV files with embedded subtitles would show a blank preview thumbnail; those now display correctly. On the conversion side, the AAC encoder produces slightly smaller files at the same bitrate, suggesting a refinement in the encoding library.

Morning workflow: three-panel layout with coffee in hand

You open YT Saver on a Tuesday morning with coffee at hand. The main window appears in its familiar three-panel arrangement: a narrow source list on the left, a central queue, and a collapsible inspector on the right. You click the built-in browser icon, which loads your default search engine in a clean, uncluttered tab. A quick search for a director’s retrospective leads you to a video platform; the page loads as it would in Safari, with playback possible but unnecessary—hovering over the video thumbnail reveals a floating download button in the top-right corner, a small semi-transparent circle with a downward arrow.

You click it. A sheet slides down from the title bar showing available resolutions and formats: 1080p MP4, 720p MP4, audio-only M4A, and a few others. You tick 1080p and also the M4A option, since the soundtrack matters as much as the image. The two items land in the queue with a soft animation. You repeat the process for three more clips, then switch to a podcast episode from a different tab. The audio-only detection kicks in immediately—no video options presented, just AAC, WAV and OGG. You choose AAC and add it. Five items now sit in the queue, each showing a small thumbnail, file size estimate, and a status dot. Pressing the Start All button in the toolbar sets them in motion; the progress bars fill smoothly, two files downloading at once while the others show “queued.” Three minutes later the folder opens automatically, revealing neatly named files ready for import into your editing timeline.

Workflow: archiving a lecture series with audio extraction

Suppose you need to preserve a ten-part lecture series from a university portal, keeping both the video for reference and a separate audio version for listening on the move. The portal uses a custom player, but YT Saver’s built-in browser handles it without complaint.

Open the browser and log into the portal as you normally would. Navigate to the first lecture. The floating download button appears; click it and choose 720p MKV for the video version. When the format sheet reappears, select M4A at 128 kbps for the audio. Both entries join the queue. Move to the second lecture and repeat. After the third lecture you realise the naming pattern—the site uses titles like “Lecture 01: Introduction”—so you pause to set an output folder called Lectures_2025 via the preferences panel; all subsequent files will land there automatically.

With all ten lectures queued (twenty items total: ten video files, ten audio files), you check the Private Mode checkbox in the toolbar. The app asks for a password; you enter one and confirm. This ensures the folder requires authentication before opening, useful if the machine is shared. You click Start All and minimise the window. The downloads proceed in pairs—two MKV files, then two M4A files—while the conversion step transforms on-the-fly from the source to the chosen output formats. An hour later, the queue is empty. The video files sit at around 400 MB each; the audio extracts weigh about 45 MB apiece. You plug in headphones, unlock the private folder with the password, and drag the M4A files onto a portable player. The process required no intermediate transcoding in a separate utility and no manual renaming—everything happened inside one window.
