GPT-4o support: keeping pace with OpenAI’s latest reasoning engine

Support for the gpt-4o model arrived, keeping the app aligned with OpenAI’s latest reasoning engine.

What MacGPT actually does

It places a small icon in the macOS menu bar. Click it and a ChatGPT panel drops down: web mode loads the familiar chat interface, while API mode connects directly using your own key. A Global shortcut summons a centred text field for quick queries without opening the full panel.

Menu bar access: skipping the browser for dozens of daily queries

Writers checking phrasing, developers grabbing boilerplate, anyone who dips into ChatGPT a dozen times a day and finds a browser tab too slow. The menu bar position means no window hunting.

What it requires

macOS Monterey or Ventura and either an OpenAI account for web mode or an API key for direct access. Intel and Apple Silicon Macs are both supported.

Constant small queries: where the menu bar rhythm beats a tab

Not everyone who uses ChatGPT occasionally will feel the difference between a browser tab and a menu bar app. The people who genuinely benefit are those whose rhythm of work involves constant small queries: the copywriter checking tone on three paragraphs, the indie developer generating a regex pattern, the translator confirming an idiomatic phrase, the student turning lecture notes into study questions.

Two groups stand out in particular. Developers working in a code editor tend to appreciate the Inline feature most: they highlight a comment stub or a half-written function, invoke the shortcut, and receive a suggestion injected directly into the text field without breaking focus. The alternative — switching to a browser, waiting for the page, copying, switching back — breaks the flow five times for one query.

The second group is anyone who writes for hours at a stretch. A journalist shaping a lead paragraph, a technical writer simplifying a procedure, a novelist testing dialogue alternatives — these are people who want the answer to appear in the same column of text they are already staring at. The Global shortcut, which opens a centred overlay, suits this well because it does not pull the eyes to the top of the screen.

Web vs. API modes: the one mix-up that causes most early frustration

Most early frustrations with MacGPT come from a single misunderstanding: confusing the two access modes. Web mode needs an OpenAI account signed in through the in-app browser; API mode needs an API key entered in the settings. If someone launches the app for the first time and tries to send a prompt in API mode without setting a key, the error message is clear — but only if they read it.

Another common slip: expecting the Inline trigger to work everywhere. It operates inside standard text fields in many native Mac apps, but not all third-party interfaces play nicely. A beginner might invoke the shortcut in a web-based editor like Google Docs and wonder why nothing happens. Testing it in TextEdit or Notes first clarifies what normal behaviour looks like.

Some users also leave the web-mode panel open for hours, treating it like a pinned browser tab. That defeats the purpose. The app works best when it is summoned, used, and dismissed — a tool for quick access, not a permanent window.

Flat captions in Tokyo: polishing a slide deck with ninety minutes to spare

Imagine a designer in Tokyo finishing a client presentation. The slide deck is nearly done, but the English captions for three product shots feel flat. The deadline is ninety minutes away.

The session might run like this:

  1. The designer opens the first caption in Keynote, highlights the sentence, and presses the Global shortcut. A centred text field appears over the slide. They type rewrite this product caption to be more vivid, no longer than twelve words and press Return.
  2. The response appears in the overlay. One suggestion works; the other two are too flowery. The designer copies the good one, dismisses the overlay, and pastes the text into Keynote.
  3. For the second caption they need something different: a factual tone with a specific technical term included. They open the full menu bar panel in API mode with gpt-4o selected, type a longer prompt describing the tone and constraints, and receive three variants. One fits.
  4. The third caption requires only a small tweak — a synonym for a word they have used twice already. They highlight the word, use the Inline shortcut, and type synonym for premium that does not sound like marketing. The replacement appears directly in the text field.
  5. They close the panel, finish formatting the slides, and export the PDF. Total interaction with ChatGPT: under four minutes across three separate queries, none of which required opening a browser or leaving Keynote.

That pattern — short, targeted requests inserted at the exact point of need — is where the app justifies its presence. The time saved per query is small, but a dozen small savings across a working day compound into real momentum.

Thousands of game strings: sanity-checking idiomatic English from Japanese

Consider a localization specialist handling a mobile game translation from Japanese to English. The project involves thousands of short strings — menu labels, item descriptions, error messages — and many need quick sanity checks against idiomatic English usage.

With MacGPT running in API mode and a shortcut assigned to Control-Shift-G, the workflow becomes almost tactile. The specialist opens a CSV file in a text editor, scrolls to a questionable string, highlights it, and taps the shortcut. Does this sound natural to a native English speaker? The reply arrives in seconds, often with a suggested alternative that preserves the original meaning while fixing the phrasing.

The Inline feature proves especially useful here: the corrected string often replaces the original directly in the editor, row by row, without a clipboard dance. By the end of a long afternoon, the specialist has processed roughly eighty strings — not by working faster, but by removing the friction of context-switching. The menu bar icon stays visible only when needed; the rest of the time it recedes into the background, exactly as a utility should.

In short: the app does not change what ChatGPT can do. It changes how quickly and how often you actually reach for it.

Questions I actually get

Does MacGPT use the official ChatGPT website or the API?

It can use both. Web mode opens the standard ChatGPT site in its panel, while API mode connects directly to OpenAI using a custom key you provide.
