Players who enjoy a gentle rhythm, the kind where a line drops into water with a soft plop and time slows down, will find their space in Cast n Chill. It is a fishing simulation that offers two modes of play: an active mode for manual casting and reeling, and an idle mode that lets the catch continue even when you step away. A loyal dog accompanies the player throughout, adding a quiet sense of companionship to each new spot.
Focus mode: fish actively or let the rod idle
- Switching between focused play and background progression
- Collecting 50 distinct fish across 13 locations
- A calm, undemanding atmosphere with a canine companion
Mac compatibility: runs as Intel code through Rosetta 2
- The Mac build runs on Intel architecture and requires Rosetta 2 on Apple Silicon
- Performance expectations should be modest: it is listed as an x86 (64-bit) binary
First cast: start in manual mode on the quiet shoreline
When you first unpack the disk image and launch the app from the Applications folder, the game opens onto a quiet shoreline. The menu does not rush you. Spend the first session in active mode: cast manually, reel in a few silver dace and perch, and let your dog settle beside you. The early catches are common, but the rhythm itself teaches you how the tension bar behaves.
After that first outing, switch to idle mode before you close the lid or leave the desk. The game continues to fish in your absence, and you return to a basket with a few surprises. A second habit: visit the tackle shop early. The first rod upgrade is modest in cost but noticeably widens the species you can pull from the deeper pools. A third one: pick one location and stay there for several in-game days before moving on. The fish populations shift with time of day, and some of the rarer catches only appear once you have spent a few hours in the same spot.
What version 1.3.0 — Old Moose Cabin — changed
The 1.3.0 update arrived in mid-June 2025 under the name Old Moose Cabin. The most visible change is a new location: a timber cabin perched at the edge of a northern lake, surrounded by conifers and low mist. The water here is deeper, and the fish take a fraction longer to bite, which alters the timing you may have grown used to in earlier spots.
Several smaller adjustments affect everyday play. The idle-mode catch rate has been tuned so that longer sessions, those left running overnight, produce a slightly wider variety of species instead of repeatedly landing the same common fish. The dog now reacts to legendary catches with a distinct bark, a small but useful signal when you are half-watching the screen. The tackle shop interface has been rearranged: rods, reels and bait now sit on separate tabs, which cuts down on scrolling when you know exactly what you need.
A morning at the lake: a sample workflow
Open Cast n Chill with a cup of coffee. You are at the lake near the cabin, the water still and grey under an overcast sky. The goal this morning is to catch one of the 13 legendary fish, specifically the Golden Trout that is rumoured to appear here only before midday.
- Check your tackle. From the shop tab, equip the medium-heavy rod and the silver spinner. The Golden Trout ignores live bait in this location, so the spinner is essential.
- Position your cast. Aim for the shaded water near the fallen log on the far bank. The cast meter sits at roughly two-thirds; a full cast here spooks the larger fish.
- Wait and watch the float. In active mode, the bobber dips twice before a solid bite. Strike on the second dip, not the first. The tension bar jumps immediately: keep it in the green zone with short, rhythmic clicks, not long holds.
- Land and log. Once the fish is in the basket, the collection page updates with its weight and a small illustration. The dog pads over and rests its head on your knee, which is the game's quiet way of marking the moment.
- Switch to idle. With the legendary catch logged, set the game to idle mode and let the afternoon run while you work. The basket will fill with perch and the occasional bass, but the rare catch is already yours.
In short: the Old Moose Cabin update sharpens the idle-mode variety and adds a location that rewards patience with a rod, while the daily loop remains as gentle as the name suggests.
