Coherence X is a tool that turns any website into a standalone desktop application, powered by the Chrome engine. The result is a self-contained window with its own Dock icon, settings, extensions and profile — as though the service were a native Mac program, not merely a tab in your browser.

Try a tabbed app with its own profile

A good first project is creating a tabbed app for a suite of work tools — say, Gmail, Calendar and a team wiki. During setup, tick the tabbed option and give the app its own profile. This keeps cookies, logins and extensions separate from your main Chrome browsing, which is useful when you want a clean boundary between work and personal accounts. Once the app is open, you can install Chrome Web Store extensions directly inside it, such as a grammar checker or a password manager, and they will live only in that workspace.

Version 6.1 makes this easier: when you add a new routing rule, Coherence X now suggests a destination. You can also enter several domains at once instead of building rules one by one. The logic is straightforward — tell the app which links open inside its own window and which should be handed off to your main browser. It is the kind of quiet control that makes a web app feel properly integrated with the rest of the system. Changes to routing and appearance save immediately, with no need to rebuild the app.

Before installing: a few things people ask

The most common question is whether Coherence X simply wraps a website in a window or actually runs a full browser engine. The answer is the latter — every app it creates uses the Chrome rendering engine under the hood, with its own sandboxed storage, so a YouTube app behaves exactly as it would in Chrome, extensions included. Another frequent concern is performance. Because each app carries the weight of a Chromium instance, running several at once does increase memory use. On a Mac with 16 GB of RAM, having four or five Coherence apps open alongside other tools is comfortable; on 8 GB machines, it pays to be selective and avoid keeping unused apps idling in the background. People also ask whether the created apps update themselves when the source website changes. They do not need to — the app always loads the live site, so you are never stuck on a stale version. The only thing worth refreshing manually is the Coherence X application itself, which the developer updates to track Chrome engine changes and macOS releases.

First settings worth adjusting

Open Coherence X and head to the preferences before you build anything. A few defaults are worth nudging right away to suit how you work.

Default browser for links: set this to your main browser — Safari, Firefox, Arc, whichever you prefer — so that external links from your Coherence apps always open where you expect them. Without this, some links may open inside a Coherence app that was never meant to handle them.

Restore tabs on restart: enable this if you build tabbed apps for services you check several times a day. It remembers which tabs were open and brings them back after quitting, which turns a tabbed app into a persistent workspace rather than something you must rebuild each session.

Incognito mode as default: if your first app will handle a service where you prefer not to leave local traces — a shared computer scenario, or a banking portal — checking this box during creation saves a step later. You can still override it per app, but setting a sensible default avoids surprises.

Dock behaviour: by default, clicking a Coherence app's Dock icon minimises and restores the window. If you would rather have it open a new window when none exists, leave the setting alone — that is the factory behaviour and it works well for single-window services like a note-taking tool or a messaging client.

Missing app fix: quit and relaunch in order

The extension's "Manage in Coherence" button does not find the right app. This was a known rough edge, partly fixed in version 6.1. If it still happens, quit both Coherence X and the app in question, relaunch Coherence X first, then open the app and try again. The connection handshake is more reliable when the host application starts first.

An app asks for a login every time it opens. This usually means the app was not assigned its own profile during creation. Without a dedicated profile, session data may not persist the way you expect. Rebuild the app and tick the profile option — the difference is immediate.

Logging in with a Google or Apple ID fails inside the app. Some authentication flows trigger pop-ups that Coherence apps block by default. Go into the app's settings inside Coherence X, find the extensions panel, and temporarily allow pop-ups for that domain. The login should complete, after which you can tighten the setting again.

An extension installed from the Chrome Web Store does not appear. Coherence X installs extensions into the app's own engine, but some extensions check for a full Chrome browser and refuse to activate. The workaround is to look for alternatives that are less strict about their environment — most popular productivity extensions work without issue.

The app's window size keeps resetting. Coherence apps remember their last window dimensions only when quit normally. If your Mac restarts or the app crashes, the size reverts to the default. Manually resize once and quit the app through its own menu rather than a system shutdown, and the size will stick.

Questions I actually get

Can I use extensions inside the apps I create?

Yes. You can install and manage Chrome Web Store extensions directly inside any app made with Coherence X.

Does Coherence X support multiple profiles for the same website?

It does. Each app can use its own profile, keeping cookies, logins and settings separate from other apps and from your main browser.

Which languages is the interface available in?

The interface is available in English, German and Spanish.
