meta mac full version: overview screenMeta layout 2Meta layout 3Meta layout 4

Meta runs on any Mac with macOS 10.13 or later, on both Intel and Apple Silicon machines.

Batch editing — apply a change to hundreds of files at once, rather than one track at a time.
Cut, copy and paste — move metadata between selected files in the same way text moves between documents.
Search and replace — tidy inconsistent tags with plain text or regular expressions.
Filename to tag — create artist, album and title fields from the structure of a filename.
Tag to filename — rename files according to a template built from their metadata.
CSV exchange — take a selection of tags into Numbers or Excel, edit them there, and bring them back.
Quick Look — preview a track without leaving the app.
Artwork — drag album art in and out, with the image stored inside the file itself.

Under the hood, Meta uses Taglib for reading and writing ID3v1, ID3v2.3, ID3v2.4, APE, MP4, Vorbis and INFO tags. The interface is localised in Russian, English, German, Spanish, Italian and French.

A librarian’s afternoon: cleaning up a live recording collection

Imagine a jazz archivist who has just digitised twenty hours of club recordings from the 1970s. The files arrived named track01.wav, track02.wav and so on — no artist, no album, no year. She opens Meta, selects the first folder and calls up the Filename to tag panel. A quick pattern — %track% - %title% — pulls the essentials into place. Then she selects all twenty files, pastes the venue name and date into the album and year fields in one move, and drags a scanned poster into the artwork well. Meta compresses it automatically to a sensible size. Half an hour later, the collection is tagged, the files renamed with a Tag to filename template, and a CSV export sits ready for her label’s database. What began as a shapeless pile of audio is now a catalogue she can browse, search and share.

Alongside similar tools: a few points of comparison

Next to Kid3, Meta feels more at home on the Mac. Both can handle batch operations and a wide range of formats, but Kid3’s interface is cross-platform by necessity — functional, yet less attuned to macOS conventions. Meta’s Quick Look integration alone saves a surprising number of trips to the Finder, and its drag-and-drop artwork handling is smoother than Kid3’s import dialogue.

Compared to Yate, Meta occupies a lighter niche. Yate offers scripting, custom actions and deep Music.app integration aimed at power users who manage libraries of fifty thousand tracks or more. Meta covers the same tagging formats — ID3, MP4, Vorbis, APE — and adds regular-expression search, CSV exchange, and a clean configurable tag view, but without the scripting overhead. For a meta mac full version workflow, Meta is easier to pick up: the learning curve is measured in minutes, not afternoons.

Then there is mp3tag, long a Windows favourite, now available on Mac. It excels at pulling metadata from online sources, something Meta does not attempt. But Meta’s approach — editing locally, exchanging data with Numbers, and relying on the user’s own judgement — appeals to anyone who prefers their tags hand-curated. And unlike mp3tag’s web-sourced art, Meta’s built-in scaling and cropping tools keep artwork tidy without external editors.

Track numbering: right-click the column to auto-number

A few things are easy to miss on first launch:

  • Right-click the track number column to auto-number a selection — useful after reordering a live set or a compilation.
  • Hold Option while dragging artwork out to export the original embedded image rather than a scaled preview.
  • Double-click a date or BPM field for a pop-up helper that formats the value correctly — no need to memorise ISO date syntax.
  • Command-Shift-V pastes metadata across selected files without touching the artwork field; the standard paste includes artwork, so this distinction prevents accidental overwrites.
  • Use a pipe character in search and replace to chain multiple substitutions in one pass — handy when normalising inconsistent genre tags like “Jazz; Jazz / Vocal; Vocal Jazz”.
  • Custom tag views (saved from the View menu) let you switch between a full editing layout and a minimal “now playing” panel with only title, artist and BPM visible — useful during a listening session.

For anyone exploring a bittorrent meta search engine or a meta tune torrent, the value of Meta becomes apparent the moment files arrive with garbled or missing tags. A few keystrokes bring order, and the results feed cleanly into any player or library manager on Meta macOS.
